Entries for the 2015-16 season will open on 1 September 2015.
Feedback received over the past few seasons, and echoed by a large survey response, confirms a very high majority of participants would like to see the Christchurch leg of the Series head back to Corsair Bay, Lyttelton.
We have listened to your feedback, considered the logistics of proposed courses and are pleased to announce we have created an exciting new event the ‘Christchurch Crown’ in Corsair Bay to replace La Grande Swim in Akaroa!
Named the ‘Christchurch Crown’ based on the interesting 3.3km ‘I’m Going Long’ course shape, this is a classic ocean swimming event that weaves in and out of three bays on the return leg to Corsair Bay.
Accommodating a large number of participants in Corsair Bay will be achieved by the event being held during a lower tide and event services being positioned in the Corsair Bay carparks, with participants (excluding mobility pass holders) parking their vehicles at Erskine Point – a short walk just around the corner.
With it’s course following the contours of the coast, the Christchurch Crown 3.3km ‘I’m Going Long’ swim will offer an amazing spectator experience for those on land with the ability to walk the track alongside swimmers as they weave in and out of the bays on their return leg back towards Corsair Bay.
The proposed course detailed in the survey which crossed the harbour from Hays Bay to Corsair Bay, has been ruled out based on negative feedback about logistics, specifically the compulsory transport via bus to the start line which was unavoidable.
We acknowledge the passionate supporters who enjoyed La Grande Swim in Akaroa as it was, and understand for some this decision will be unwelcome news. Without question Akaroa is a stunning place to visit and swim, however this decision has been made as a result of feedback and comments from a large majority regarding the additional time and expense to travel to Akaroa as a barrier to participating, along with much discussion around the appeal of the swim courses themselves.
We look forward to sharing more information regarding these changes and other exciting news over the coming months and will continue to seek feedback to ensure the new venue provides a spectacular event for all participants.
