From its inception in 2004 with its first 300 swimmers, the King of the Bays event has grown to 1600 happy swimmers – demonstrating a huge amount of loyalty and interest in the event across all swimming abilities.

Its popularity is also no surprise given the stunning scenery and atmosphere created around the event in the lifestyle-focused communities of Takapuna and Milford.

The King of the Bays was the founding event over a decade ago in what has become New Zealand’s most popular ocean swim series. The King of the Bays usually attracts the largest field of swimmers from beginners keen to Give it a Go over 300m, to those ready to Step it Up to 1km and the ‘big guns’ taking on the 2.8km distance.

This is also one of the five events in our series that offers a dedicated kids event over 200m- aptly titled the OceanKids. As the Series decider there is always huge anticipation as the long distance swimmers head out from Milford Beach and cross the finish line at Takapuna.

Iconic Rangitoto Island acts as backdrop for what has become one of the highlights of New Zealand’s sporting calendars.

If this is the case all competitors will be advised prior by email, text message, on the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series Facebook page and website.

‘Step it Up’ 1km Swim, ‘Give It A Go’ 300m Swim and State OceanKids

In the event of weather that prevents the swimmers from being able to complete the swim courses safely, the swims maybe altered from the advertised courses to provide the safest and most enjoyable swimming conditions.

How do I wear the timing chip?

Thread the thin part of the strap through the timing chip and fasten the Velcro strap securely around your ankle. We recommend you put your wetsuit over the chip to keep it secure. If you lose it, you will be liable for a replacement cost of $50. Once you have completed the event your chip is collected at the finish line. If you have a problem fastening your timing chip just ask one of the event officials on event day, they will be able to assist you.

Yes, providing entries haven’t sold out online prior. We recommend you enter online to avoid disappointment.

Results will be published on the event website on the evening of each event. All swimmers that took part in a timed event will be able to download a certificate from the results page.

What is a ‘wave start’?

A ‘wave start’ requires smaller groups to start at different times to reduce congestion and will be based on the estimated times.

I still have my timing chip – what do I do?

If you have taken it home by mistake, please post it back to us at the following address: Quantum Events Ltd PO Box 33-1057 Takapuna Auckland 0740

A decision to run with the contingency plan for the ocean swims will be made in the event of bad weather or circumstances beyond the control of the event management. The Race Director in conjunction with Surf Life Saving New Zealand will make this decision on race morning in the interest of your safety. Updates will be given to you on race morning. For contingency decisions made the day prior – please check our website home page & event page as well as your own email inbox for the latest information.

What happens if I have difficulties in the water?

Simple! Stop! Raise your arm high into the air to identify yourself to a lifeguard. If this is not possible, simply roll on to your back to float in a relaxed position. If you are near an athlete experiencing difficulties, please make sure they are alright, assist if necessary, and alert a lifeguard.

Refunds are not available, but we can transfer your entry across to another swim in the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series at the cost of $15. Please contact us at info@oceanswim.co.nz to arrange this transfer. Should you decide not to swim, you are still entitled to collect your event swim pack, please advise crew of your decision so that you are not issued with a timing chip.
