The French inspired village of Canterbury’s Akaroa, plays host to the State La Grande Swim. Combine great food, wine and charming accommodation with some genuinely friendly locals and this is an event not to be missed by swimmers or their supporters.

An easy drive from Christchurch this swim is just as popular with North Islanders keen for a weekend away as it is with Mainlanders. This season offers the same four event distances to choose from including an ‘I’m Going Long’ 2.8km swim around the Bay, the ‘Step It Up’ 1000m swim, ‘Give It A Go’ 300m swim and last but not least, the 200m State OceanKids event.

Due to the event being held one day after the opening game of the 2015 Cricket World Cup match which is being held in Christchurch, we advise booking flights and accommodation nice and early for those traveling from afar.

Swimmers wanting to make a weekend of their time in Akaroa can check out www.akaroa.com for ideas and options of what is on offer in this beautiful part of the country. Maybe the weekend could even include a ‘warm-up’ on Saturday, watching the Black Caps beat Sri Lanka in the World Cup opener at Hagley Park, Christchurch.
