The Sand to Surf – a favourite amongst many of the faithful participants, is a compulsory event for ocean swimmers yearning to earn their stripes. For ‘I’m Going Long’ 2.6km swimmers it’s the only chance to swim out around picturesque Motuotau & Moturiki Islands with the confidence of professional local Surf Life Saving New Zealand guards alongside you every stroke of your journey. “Make the most of this opportunity grasshopper”

Key Event Information
Your swim pack will contain;
• A Timing Chip and Strap*
• A silcon swim cap that you must wear for the event
• A drawstring gear bag courtesy of Ford
*Please fasten the timing chip securely to your ankle with the supplied strap. The chip is on loan to you and must be returned after the event. A replacement chip is $30.00
Getting Your Swim Pack
When registering for the event online you can choose to either pay a courier fee to have your swim pack delivered to you in the week leading into the event, or to collect your swim pack from the Event Registration at Trinity Wharf Tauranga, 4-8pm on Friday 11th March.
Bag Storage Area
An area designated for gear bags will be available for all swimmers. This will be situated at the main event site on Mount Main Beach. Please only use the plastic drawstring bags we have provided you.
For ‘I’m Going Long’ 2.6km swimmers you will get ready to swim at the finish area and leave your gear bag and walk to the start line (approx 15min walk down the beach).
Cut off times
Each event has a cut off time:
•‘I’m Going Long’ 2.6km Swim – the total cut off time is 1 hour 40 minutes after the last wave starts. All swimmers must make the 800m buoy in 30 minutes
•‘Step it Up’ 1km Swim – the cut of time is 40 minutes after the event start
•‘Give It A Go’ 300m Swim – the cut off time is 13 minutes after the event start

Decisions for all swims will be made by the Race Director in conjunction with Surf Life Saving NZ
‘I’m Going Long’ 2.6km Swim
In the event of weather or surf preventing the ‘I’m Going Long’ swim going ahead safely, the swim will be moved to a smaller course at Main beach or relocated to Pilot Bay. Pilot Bay is a short 5 minute walk from Main Beach. If this is the case all swimmers will be advised prior by email, text message, on the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series Facebook page and website.
‘Step it Up’ 1km Swim, ‘Give It A Go’ 300m Swim and OceanKids
In the event of weather that prevents the swimmers from being able to complete the swim courses safely, the swims maybe altered from the advertised courses to provide the safest and most enjoyable swimming conditions.
What is the minimum age for each swim length?
• OceanKids – for children aged between 7 – 13 years old
• ‘Give It A Go’ 300m – minimum age is 10 years old
• ‘Step It Up’ 1000m – minimum age is 12 years old
• 2.6km ‘I’m Going Long’ – minimum age is 14 years old
For swimmers under these minimum ages that have consent from a legal guardian to enter, you must seek pre-approval from the Race Director by contacting us proving their ability to swim in this race.

How do I know I am entered?
You will receive an event confirmation email, confirming your registration.
I haven’t received my confirmation email, can you send it again?
Your confirmation email was sent to the email address you provided on your entry form. Please check your junk mail/spam folder. For any queries, please contact us at email@example.com.
What time does my swim start and from where?
Please refer to the “Event Times” box on the right hand side of this webpage. Or for more information click on the “Timetable” tab above. We also send regular email newsletters, so be sure that you have subscribed to this.
Can I change my estimated swim time?
Yes, you can change this by emailing us at least 10 days before the event.
What do I get in my swim pack?

How do I wear the timing chip?
Thread the strap through the timing chip and fasten the strap securely around your ankle. We recommend you put your wetsuit over the chip to keep it secure. If you lose it, you will be liable for a replacement cost of $30.
Once you have completed the event your chip is collected at the finish line.
If you have a problem fastening your timing chip just ask one of the event officials on event day, they will be able to assist you.
Are there entry limits for the events?
Yes. For safety reasons, there is a maximum number of competitors allowed at each event. Enter early to avoid disappointment.
Can I enter on the day?
Yes, providing entries haven’t sold out online prior. We recommend you enter online to avoid disappointment.
How can I see the results?
Results will be published on the event website on the evening of each event. All swimmers that took part in a timed event will be able to download a certificate from the results page.
What is a ‘wave start’?
A ‘wave start’ requires smaller groups to start at different times to reduce congestion and will be based on the estimated times.

Note that if you have registered with a ‘Series Pass’ and are taking part in 3 or more events this season, you can keep your timing chip to use at all of your events over the Summer. Please return your timing chip to us following the final event that you are taking part in.
If it’s cold, can I swim with booties/skull cap/gloves?
It has been approved the use of the following:
• wetsuit booties
• skull caps (your event swim cap must be worn over the skull cap and must remain visible for the duration of the race)
• wetsuit gloves (must NOT be webbed)
What happens in bad weather?
A decision to run with the contingency plan for the ocean swims will be made in the event of bad weather or circumstances beyond the control of the event management. The Race Director in conjunction with Surf Life Saving New Zealand will make this decision on race morning in the interest of your safety. Updates will be given to you on race morning. For contingency decisions made the day prior – please check our website home page & event page as well as your own email inbox for the latest information.
What happens if I have difficulties in the water?
Simple! Stop! Raise your arm high into the air to identify yourself to a lifeguard. If this is not possible, simply roll on to your back to float in a relaxed position. If you are near an athlete experiencing difficulties, please make sure they are alright, assist if necessary, and alert a lifeguard.
I can no longer make it, can I get a refund?
Refunds are not available, but we can transfer your entry across to another swim in the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series at the cost of $15. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange this transfer.
Should you decide not to swim, you are still entitled to collect your event swim pack, please advise crew of your decision so that you are not issued with a timing chip.
I don’t feel ready for my event, could I transfer to another race?
Yes you can. It comes at a cost of $15 to a transfer your entry to a different event or you can choose to transfer to a smaller length swim, in the same event, for no extra charge. Please contact us at email@example.com to transfer your event registration.
Do I need a wetsuit?
Although not compulsory, we suggest wearing a wetsuit for the long ocean swim distances.
