Ahh, Mount Maunganui. Sunny skies, bleached white sand, rich blue water and a big old extinct volcano perched at the end of the beach – throw in Rachel Hunter with a ‘Trumpet’ and you have completely captured summertime in NZ!

The Sand to Surf – a favourite amongst many of the faithful participants, is a compulsory event for ocean swimmers yearning to earn their stripes. For ‘I’m Going Long’ 2.6km swimmers it’s the only chance to swim out around picturesque Motuotau & Moturiki Islands with the confidence of professional local Surf Life Saving New Zealand guards alongside you every stroke of your journey. “Make the most of this opportunity grasshopper”

• Timing Chip and Strap
• Silcone Swim Cap (that you must wear for the event)

• Bottle of Loaded electrolyte drink at event finish line

Contingency Courses

Decisions for all swims will be made by the Race Director in conjunction with Surf Life Saving NZ

‘I’m Going Long’ 2.6km Swim

In the event of weather or surf preventing the ‘I’m Going Long’ swim going ahead safely, the swim will be moved to a smaller course at Main Beach or relocated to Pilot Bay. Pilot Bay is a short 5 minute walk from Main Beach. If this is the case, all swimmers will be advised prior by email, text message, on the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series Facebook page and website.

‘Step it Up’ 1000m Swim, ‘Give It A Go’ 500m Swim and ‘OceanKids’ 200m

In the event of weather that prevents the swimmers from being able to complete the swim courses safely, the swims maybe altered from the advertised courses to provide the safest and most enjoyable swimming conditions.

 

Getting Your Swim Pack
When registering for the event online you can choose to either:
• Pay a courier fee to have your swim pack delivered to you in the week leading into the event
• Collect your swim pack for free from the Event Registration – Mount Maunganui College Library, 6.30-8.30pm on Friday 18th November or
• Pay for the added convenience to collect your pack up on event morning at the event site on Mount Main Beach.

 

Bag Storage Area
An area designated for gear bags will be available for all swimmers to store their bags in while they take part in their event. This will be situated at the main event site on Mount Main Beach. Bags will need to be labeled with swimmer name (using bag label provided in swim pack). Please note, swimmers taking part in the 2.6km ‘I’m Going Long’ event will need to leave their bag at this finish area before walking down the beach to their event start line (approx 15min walk).

What is the minimum age for each swim length?

• 200m OceanKids – for children aged between 7 – 12 years old

• 500m ‘Give It A Go’ – minimum age is 8 years old

• 1km ‘Step It Up’ – minimum age is 10 years old

• 2.6km ‘I’m Going Long’ – minimum age is 12 years old

How do I know I am entered?

You will receive an event confirmation email, confirming your registration.

I haven’t received my confirmation email, can you send it again?

What time does my swim start and from where?

Please refer to the “Timetable” tab on this webpage.

Can I change my estimated swim time?

How do I wear the timing chip?

Thread the strap through the timing chip and fasten the strap securely around your ankle. If you lose it, you will be liable for a replacement cost of $30.

Once you have completed the event your chip is collected at the finish line.

If you have a problem fastening your timing chip just ask one of the event officials on event day, they will be able to assist you.

Are there entry limits for the events?

Yes. For safety reasons, there is a maximum number of participants allowed at each event. Enter early to avoid disappointment.

Can I enter on the day?

Yes, providing entries haven’t sold out online prior. We recommend you enter online to avoid disappointment.

How can I see the results?

Results will be published on the event website on the evening of each event. A certificate can also be downloaded from this results page.

What is a ‘wave start’?

A ‘wave start’ requires smaller groups to start at different times to reduce congestion and will be based on the estimated times swimmers have given us when they registered.

I still have my timing chip – what do I do?

If you have taken it home by mistake, please post it back to us at the following address:

Note that if you have registered with a ‘Series Pass’ and are taking part in 3 or more events this season, you can keep your timing chip to use at all of your events over the Summer. Please return your timing chip to us following the final event that you are taking part in.

If it’s cold, can I swim with booties/skull cap/gloves?

It has been approved the use of the following:

• wetsuit booties

• skull caps  (your event swim cap must be worn over the skull cap and must remain visible for the duration of the race)

• wetsuit gloves (must NOT be webbed)

What happens in bad weather?

A decision to run with the contingency plan for the ocean swims will be made in the event of bad weather or circumstances beyond the control of the event management. The Race Director in conjunction with Surf Life Saving New Zealand will make this decision on race morning in the interest of your safety. Updates will be given to you on race morning. For contingency decisions made the day prior – please check our website home page & event page as well as your own email inbox for the latest information.

What happens if I have difficulties in the water?

Simple! Stop! Raise your arm high into the air to identify yourself to a lifeguard. If this is not possible, simply roll on to your back to float in a relaxed position. If you are near an athlete experiencing difficulties, please make sure they are alright, assist if necessary, and alert a lifeguard.

I can no longer make it, can I get a refund?

I don’t feel ready for my event, could I transfer to another swim distance?

Do I need a wetsuit?

Although not compulsory, we suggest wearing a wetsuit for the long ocean swim distances.
