Swim Markin swim clinics, supported by Sport Northland, will be led by Karen Markin and Nikki Field. Karen has been involved with open water swimming for over 35 years. She currently runs a small, highly successful swim school specialising in tailor made tuition in pools and the ocean, and adult squads. Nikki, after 25 years in the Aquatics and Water Industry, has recently finished her Bachelor in Sport and Recreation. She also now runs a small swim school focusing on water safety and aquatic recreation. Karen and Nikki aim to make the quality one hour clinic relaxed and enjoyable. Whilst swimming in the company of likeminded people, you will have access to expert guidance and, under similar conditions to those on the Bay of Islands Classic race day, an opportunity to learn and / or practice:
- How to swim efficiently and effectively over long distances
- Navigations skills including: sighting, maintaining a straight line, dealing with currents rounding buoys
- Race starts and finishes
- Swimming in a pack amongst the chaos and remaining calm
- And much more!
Minimum requirements: Participants must be over the age of 16 and must be able to swim 300m non-stop and tread water confidently.
Who the clinic is suitable for / what objectives: Suitable to anyone who is:
- new to ocean swimming
- wanting to learn specifics of ocean swim races
- wanting to improve your water confidence and performance.

What to bring: Swim wear, wetsuit (optional), goggles, swim cap, sunscreen and warm clothes for afterwards. Locations: Paihia Beach, Marsden Road, opposite the Alfresco Cafe. There is ample parking on the beach front.

LEVELS & TIME
a) Advanced – 7.10am
Faster than 1min 45 for 10 x 100m with R20 Hard and/or long structured training workouts.
Main Focus = Fitness and Strength through motivating coached workouts with others.
You can expect some hard and long sessions.
b) Intermediate – 8.20am
Faster than 2min 30 per 100m and 600m non-stop.
Varied workouts coached for Tech and Fitness.
Main Focus = learning or improving technique while building endurance to increase speed.
You can expect a mix of technique and distance.
c) Beginner – 9.30am
At least 100m non-stop freestyle.
Confidence and skill based teaching sessions.
Main Focus = relaxed breathing with correct body position and long slow strokes to help improve confidence and build non-stop distance.

Shorebreak Aquatics Ltd is the swim coaching programme of Sheryl McLay based at Mount Maunganui. A program with a big open water focus, it is the squad of choice for Triathletes and other open water swimmers.
Throughout each summer Shorebreak Aquatics, in association with Team Shorebreak Inc (Aquatic Sports and Triathlon Club), offers a comprehensive programme of open water skills sessions. These sessions are held in both Pilot Bay and Main Mount Maunganui Beach. The programme is structured and progressive and covers all aspects of open water swimming. Shorebreak also offers a full range of pool swimming squads from beginner through to elite. In addition an ocean skills programme for children under the age of 14 years is available.
Ocean Skills Sessions: Ocean Skills Sessions take place Thursdays at Pilot Bay (the grassed area nearest to Salisbury Wharf) from 6.00pm – 7.15pm and on Saturdays from 7.00am – 8.15am. All sessions are coached and patrolled by lifeguards. To take part in these sessions you must first become a member of Team Shorebreak Inc. A membership will cost just $15 per year along together with a one off $40 user pays fee. Once you are signed up you can take part in as many skills sessions as you like. Team Shorebreak Swim Series: Team Shorebreak Inc also offers its Ocean Swim Series, this series of 750m and 1500m swims are specifically designed as build up events to the summer’s major events in our area as well as 350m swims for those 12yrs and under. Races are scheduled for Thursdays 11and 18 December 2014, 1, 8, 15 22 and 29 January 2015 in Pilot Bay. Other events include the Splash and Dash on 9 January 2014.
Minimum requirements: Participants must be able to swim 300m non-stop and tread water confidently to participate in the clinics.
Who the clinics are suitable for / what objectives: Anyone and everyone wanting to improve on:
- Water entry and exit techniques incl. Wading and Duck Diving
- Direction finding
- Coping with the Surf
A lifeguard is present on the water at all sessions.
Dates and times available: Thursday and Saturdays starting 30 October 2014, until late March 2015. Thursdays at 6pm and Saturdays 7am.
What to bring: Togs / wetsuit, goggles, swim cap and towel

Christchurch born international open water swim coach specialist, Dan Abel will be delivering a series of open water training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout the summer (Nov-Feb) in Christchurch.
This is a great series for triathletes and open water swimmers looking to focus on technique and fitness in the open water. Swim participants can expect to increase fitness, improve technique and learn more about open water swimming.
Suitability: Sessions are suitable for anyone aged 16 years or older looking to improve their open water swimming abilities. Participants should be able to comfortably swim a minimum of 1km freestyle/front crawl in a pool.
