Capital Classic – Sunday 29 January 2017

Some people say Wellington can be windy. In our collective experience, we concur.

But there is more to Wellington than the resident stiff breeze, an oversized cake tin, and the very large nest of politicians for which the city is commonly associated. Yes indeed, Wellington has an absolutely positively beautiful harbour which plays host to the absolutely positively awesome Capital Classic Ocean Swim.

Open Water swimming in Wellington can be a daunting prospect, so take the opportunity to do it safely and in style with the country’s most experienced and well-resourced crew. Safety comes first at the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series which is why we ensure the best support crew are in the water with you, including an enormous contingent from Surf Life Saving New Zealand with support when possible from the Harbour Master and the New Zealand Police. Rest assured they’ll be there for support and encouragement for every stroke of your challenge!

Decisions for all swims will be made by the Race Director in conjunction with Surf Life Saving NZ

‘I’m Going Long’ 3.3km Swim

In the event of weather that prevents the Capital Classic ‘I’m Going Long’ 3.3km swim going ahead safety, the swim will be shortened to a 2km contingency course starting and finishing at the same start location but will not go all the way out to Pt Jerningham Lighthouse. This course suits days when the Capital is hit by a blustery north-westerly wind. If this is the case all competitors will be advised prior by email, text message, on the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series Facebook page and website. The briefing will take part at the same Frank Kitts Park location.

‘Step it Up’ 1000m, ‘Give it a Go’ 500m and ‘Banana Boat OceanKids’ 200m

In the event of weather that prevents the swimmers from being able to complete the swim courses safely, the swims maybe altered from the advertised courses to provide the safest and most enjoyable swimming conditions.
