World Champion Triathlete, Jenny Rose and National Surf Water polo and long-distance swimmer Anna Marshall, coach a sea swim clinic for swimmers of all abilities, covering the full range of open water skills. Get ready for the Capital Classic event this summer and build your confidence, improve your skills and fitness, connect with others in a safe and fun training environment and enjoy swimming in the sea!

Matiu/Somes Island Swim

Saturday 15th February 2020

Join up to this unique & exceptional swim adventure in the heart of Wellington’s harbour. Matiu/Somes Island is a DOC protected Island & national treasure. Crystal clear waters & beautiful views from both above & below the water line – this is a simply magic day out.

Swimmers either take the East by West ferry over to the Island and swim around it or they take the slow way over – swimming the 3 km stretch from Petone Beach – before joining everyone else and swimming around it. Swimmers are ferried back to the city after the swim completion.

Course 1: 6.7 km Petone and Around the Islands

Course 2: 3.7 km Matiu/Somes + Mokopuna Islands

Course 3: 3.0 km Matiu/Somes Island only

Entry includes East by West ferry trip over to/return from the Island, plus a DOC donation.

* Postponement dates are Sun 16th Feb, then Sat 22nd Feb and finally Sun 23rd Feb.

Fit and Abel Open Water Fitness and Technique Series

This is a great series for triathletes and open water swimmers looking to focus on technique and fitness in the open water. Swim participants can expect to increase fitness, improve technique and learn more about open water swimming. Sessions are suitable for anyone aged 16 years or older looking to improve their open water swimming abilities. Participants should be able to comfortably swim a minimum of 1500M freestyle/front crawl in a pool.

Karen Markin – Ocean Swim Clinic

Karen has been involved with open water swimming for over 35 years and currently runs a small, highly successful swim school specialising in tailor-made tuition in pools and the ocean, and adult squads.

Karen aims to make the quality one-hour clinic relaxed and enjoyable. Whilst swimming in the company of likeminded people, you will have access to expert guidance and, under similar conditions to those on the Bay of Islands Classic race day, an opportunity to learn and/or practice:

How to swim efficiently and effectively over long distances, navigational skills including: sighting, maintaining a straight line, dealing with currents, rounding buoys, starts and finishes, swimming in a pack, amongst the chaos and remaining calm.

Minimum Requirements: Participants must be over the age of 16, be able to swim 300m non-stop and tread water confidently.

Shorebreak Aquatics – Open Water Skills Sessions

Throughout each summer Shorebreak Aquatics, in association with Team Shorebreak Inc (Aquatic Sports and Triathlon Club), offer a comprehensive programme of open water skills sessions. The programme is structured and progressive and covers all aspects of open water swimming. All sessions are coached and patrolled by lifeguards. Participants must be able to swim 300m non-stop and tread water confidently to participate in the clinics.

The clinics are suitable for anyone and everyone wanting to improve on water entry + exit techniques incl. wading and duck diving, direction finding, coping with the surf.
