Karen Markin – Ocean Swim Clinic
Karen has been involved with open water swimming for over 35 years and currently runs SWIM MARKIN, a small, highly successful swim school specialising in tailor-made tuition in pools and the ocean, and adult squads.

Karen aims to make the quality one hour clinic relaxed and enjoyable. Whilst swimming in the company of likeminded people, you will have access to expert guidance and, under similar conditions to those on the Duke of Marlborough Hotel Bay of Islands Classic race day, an opportunity to learn and/or practice:

  • How to swim efficiently and effectively over long distances
  • Navigational skills including: sighting, maintaining a straight line, dealing with currents, rounding buoys
  • Race starts and finishes
  • Swimming in a pack, amongst the chaos and remaining calm

Where: Paihia Beach, Marsden Road – opposite the Alfresco Cafe
When: 9am Sunday 10 December 2017 (1hr) *please arrive 15mins earlier for registration purposes
Minimum Requirements: Participants must be over the age of 16, be able to swim 300m non-stop and tread water confidently.
Cost & payment options: $20 non-refundable. Payment can be made by cash, cheque or internet banking when making the booking. Please note entries on the day will not be accepted, places are limited.

Ocean Swim Clinic with Evelyn Williamson

Former NZ International Triathlete and Olympian, Evelyn Williamson will share her experience with you in a friendly format. Evelyn will offer you advice on many aspects of your training and racing, of if you are a beginner, she will offer you a starting point on how to maximise your enjoyment of the Ocean Swim Series and how to swim efficiently and effectively over long distances.

Looking to add another open water swim to your summer calendar? The 2018 Epic Swim on 13-14 January at Lake Taupo is the perfect event for the whole family, with swims for all ages and abilities, and not to mention the gram worthy backdrop.

Distances in the Epic Swim include:
Mini Epic 100m (5-10 years)
Minor Epic 500m (9-16 years)
Mid Epic 1km (10 years +)
Epic 2.5km (12 years +)
Epic 5km (12 years +)
Epic 10km (13 years +)
Epic Epic 17.5km (13 years +)
Masters 2.5km (25 years +)

The event is also run in conjunction with the New Zealand Open Water Championships giving you the opportunity to watch some of the country’s best open water swimmers in action or put yourself to the test against them.

Shorebreak Aquatics – Open Water Skills Sessions
Throughout each summer Shorebreak Aquatics, in association with Team Shorebreak Inc (Aquatic Sports and Triathlon Club), offer a comprehensive programme of open water skills sessions. The programme is structured and progressive and covers all aspects of open water swimming. All sessions are coached and patrolled by lifeguards. Participants must be able to swim 200m non-stop and tread water confidently to participate in the clinics.

The clinics are suitable for anyone and everyone wanting to improve on:

  • Water entry + exit techniques incl. wading and duck diving
  • Direction finding
  • Coping with the Surf

Where: Pilot Bay (the grassed area nearest to Salisbury Wharf)
When: Thursdays 6pm – 7.30pm and Saturdays 7am – 8.30am from 26 Oct 2017 – late March 2018
Cost & payment options: $20 per session for casuals ($120 for the summer; discounted to $40 for pool squad members)

Fit and Abel Open Water Fitness and Technique Series

This is a great series for triathletes and open water swimmers looking to focus on technique and fitness in the open water. Swim participants can expect to increase fitness, improve technique and learn more about open water swimming. Sessions are suitable for anyone aged 16 years or older looking to improve their open water swimming abilities. Participants should be able to comfortably swim a minimum of 1500M freestyle/front crawl in a pool.
